GrasshopperGrasshopper is a visual programming language and environment that runs within the Rhinoceros 3D computer-aided design (CAD) application. The program was created by David Rutten at Robert McNeel & Associates. Programs are created by dragging components onto a canvas. The outputs to these components are then connected to the inputs of subsequent components.
Grasshopper is primarily used to build generative algorithms, such as for generative art. Many of Grasshopper's components create 3D geometry. Programs may also contain other types of algorithms including numeric, textual, audio-visual and haptic applications. Advanced uses of Grasshopper include parametric modelling for structural engineering, parametric modelling for architecture and fabrication, lighting performance analysis for eco-friendly architecture and building energy consumption. Grasshopper is now part of Rhino 6.0. AEC Magazine stated that Grasshopper is "Popular among students and professionals, McNeel Associate’s Rhino modelling tool is endemic in the architectural design world. The new Grasshopper environment provides an intuitive way to explore designs without having to learn to script." Research supporting this claim has come from product design and architecture.
Grasshopper was the primary design tool for these global projects by well-known global designers.
FAQ of Grasshopper and Learning Session
1. Who are using Grasshopper? Architects, interior designers, product designers, engineers, hobbyists 2. Is there any stand alone Grasshopper? No. Grasshopper is now part of Rhinoceros 6.0 3. I'm familiar with Autocad and Rhinoceros. Is it difficult to learn Grasshopper? Grasshopper requires user to translate their logical thinking into algorithms that would construct the functions and flows of the whole creation process. It requires familiarization of some main functions and clear picture on how things are done in Grasshopper. Substantially, learning Grasshopper isn't as difficult as it's seen. With the right approach, Rhino users can go through and start using Grasshopper. Sentra Grafika provides accelerated learning session for Rhino users in Jakarta and surrounding area. 4. How long is the Grasshopper accelerated learning session? It takes only 2 sessions (4 hours each) in total to learn Grasshopper as Deep Practical and Accelerated Sessions. 5. Is it possible for us to learn Grasshopper in that short period of time? With Sentra Grafika's history and more than 25 years of experience in delivering high quality knowledge to many Autocad and 3ds max users, Grasshopper learning materials were constructed with no exception as well. Materials had gone through several stages in order to make sure it's deliverable and useful to construct the logic and mindset of participants in such effective and efficient ways. There are many things got evolved. Including the way learning materials are delivered. So yes, we are confident that any participant could learn Grasshopper in that short period of time. 6. Why is the learning time so short? We value your time. And we don't want you to waste it unnecessarily. The way we developed and constructed the materials had gone through some deep tests as it's developed by our company founder, Bimo Adi Prakoso. He's also keen to deliver the materials himself. And the value of the learning activity has jumped up high. Participant will benefit the learning time as it's only conducted in very limited numbers of participant each session. It's like "private sessions" with our founder when you're learning Grasshopper at Sentra Grafika Kompumedia. Download the Grasshopper Learning Session digital brochure, from the link, below.
The video below, contains a short preview of the final material for in-depth discussion between the participants and session mentor.
