YES: Igniting a Passion for STEM in Young Minds

YES (Young Engineers and Scientists) is an incubator program created by Sentra Grafika Kompumedia, designed to provide children with immersive learning experiences that go far beyond traditional schooling. We offer opportunities to explore advanced concepts in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics – subjects often inaccessible at a young age. Sentra Grafika’s commitment to innovation drives the program's development and ensures its continued growth.

Founded by Bimo Adi Prakoso, the visionary founder of Sentra Grafika Kompumedia (SGK), YES delivers a proven curriculum rooted in practical experience. Mr. Prakoso pioneered 3ds Max visualization and animation training in Indonesia in the mid-90s and further honed his teaching skills through volunteer work at a Jakarta private school from 2015 to 2019, where he introduced elementary students to advanced scientific concepts previously unavailable to them.

A particularly memorable experience involved teaching fourth and fifth graders simplified aeronautics, culminating in their design and construction of radio-controlled (RC) planes. READ MORE.

YES activities are grounded in a STEM approach, breaking down complex subjects like aeronautics into accessible and engaging modules. Our unique methodology emphasizes hands-on experimentation, critical thinking, and collaborative problem-solving – fostering a proactive learning environment that empowers young minds.

The YES Learning Journey
Our program utilizes an evolving "DNA" to deliver materials in a way that’s not just interesting but also encourages active participation. Students learn through observation, questioning, discussion, and experimentation, culminating in a summarized conclusion that reinforces their understanding.

Developing Essential Skills for Future Innovators
Through participation in YES activities, we aim to cultivate a range of essential skills that will empower our young participants to become confident problem-solvers and creative thinkers.  Our program is designed not just to impart knowledge but also to foster the crucial abilities needed to thrive in an increasingly complex world. Specifically, participants will develop:
  • Computational Thinking & Problem Solving: Learn to break down challenges into manageable steps and devise innovative solutions through hands-on projects.
  • Creative Expression & Independent Thought: Explore unconventional approaches and cultivate their own unique perspectives through design challenges and open-ended experimentation.
  • Critical Analysis & Initiative: Evaluate information objectively, identify opportunities for improvement, and take proactive steps to achieve goals.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Effectively share ideas, work constructively in teams, and build consensus around shared objectives.

Developing these skills early in life is crucial for setting students on a path toward future success.

A Brief Example How YES Simplifies A Subject
Explaining aeronautics – how airplanes fly – can be tricky, especially for kids!  Imagine trying to explain lift and drag without confusing anyone. The key is breaking down a big topic into smaller, manageable pieces, following the S-T-E-M approach: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. But it's not just about listing topics; it’s about sparking curiosity. Yes, we want them to be genuinely interested!

To do that, let's start with something familiar: birds and insects.  Instead of launching into equations, we ask questions: 'How does a bird fly? What makes a mosquito so nimble?'  Yes, these are great starting points! By observing how living things fly, kids naturally begin to wonder about the principles at work – lift, drag, thrust, and weight. This approach simplifies a complex subject by connecting it to their everyday experiences.

"Following the initial discussion, students take notes and review key concepts to prepare for subsequent activities. These activities will explore topics in technology, engineering, and mathematics related to aeronautics, all presented at a level appropriate for their understanding. We incorporate stimulating challenges designed to encourage critical thinking.

More advanced learning opportunities in aeronautics will be available after completion of the initial schedule.

Activities
YES is currently partnering with elementary and high schools to offer hands-on aeronautics classes. If you are interested in bringing these classes to your educational institution, please complete the form below.
