Upgrading the Graphics Performance of My HP Zbook Studio with AMD FirePro W7100 8GB Workstation Graphics

11/4/2019

I didn't realize that it's been 3 years now since I first used my HP Zbook Studio. It's a powerful one piece of beatiful mobile workstation, crafted by HP. Even now, my HP Zbook Studio still gives impression of how premium the look and the hardware are.
Picture
With onboard 6th gen Intel Core i7 4 core processor, it still could keep up with the workload I have on daily basis such as designing complex RC planes and UAVs, up to Computational Fluid Dynamics using OpenFOAM and Paraview. it's simply stunning of how this beautiful piece of hardware could perform such tasks.

However, the demands continue to grow once I started to use Blender 2.8 on it. Eevee rendering engine demand more powerful graphics which the on-board Nvidia Quadro M1000M with 4GB graphics memory couldn't keep up well enough. It requires more graphics computing power and consumes more memory for real-time Eevee rendering engine inside Blender to perform as expected.

Just like any other people who work at their best, sometimes, we all need a break from what we daily do. Aside from gathering with my family, I do keep my mind away to a "neverland" that keeps on refreshing my technical skill and imagination. The HP Zbook Studio and Rhinoceros 6.0 give me the chance to keep on doing it.

5 Things in The New HP Zbook 15v That Engineers Would Really Hate 4 Years Ago

13/4/2018

Okay, okay. The title may confuse numbers of people, when they only read the title without reading through the article. And in this article, I would be talking about the new HP Zbook 15v, that from my personal perspective may technically be the mobile workstation that most engineers and designers hate, if we bring it back to 2014.

Some numbers of test results were taken from various sources and references, and compiled them together in order to give bigger picture of the Zbook 15v, instead of just partial information.

Rhinoceros + HP Zbook Studio = Unlimited Creativity

I've been spending nearly 4 years now in RC plane hobby. I started to design my own parkjet back in early 2015. Started it with HP Zbook 14 and Rhinoceros. Things get even more exciting to me after I have my own Zbook Studio, as well as getting awesome support from global rc plane enthusiasts communities.

After designing some groundbreaking parkjets, I finally came up with a jaw dropping design (according to my colleagues abroad), the Sukhoi SU-30SM. And here's my story.

Through the years, software gets developed and enhanced along with their newer release. Some give changes in both features and price, some others are free. However, the free ones is no longer considered as tools to have fun. Blender for example. It is now considered one of the most powerful 3d modeling, animation, rendering and visual effects software on earth. It has evolved into something that can directly compete with other commercial software, offering many features, giving the answers and solution to many animators and graphics artists.

Accelerated Computing: Bringing High Performance Computing to The Next Level

2/8/2017

The last 20 years the computer industry, engineering and design industry have been evolving so much, specially when chip manufacturers were concentrating on high clock speed and more transistors implemented in the processor to finish the job quicker.  The computing magnitude drastically had risen to a point, where it needed to change its direction in the beginning of 21st century. Therefore, we started to get the introduction of multi-core and multi-threads support. In order to keep up with the changes, software architecture needed to change as well. At that time, I was still concentrating to speed up rendering time, utilizing any available resources in the network using parallel distributed rendering.

But now, everything has changed. Multi-core, multi-threads, parallel computing and even distributed computing have been common things. The birth of GPUs had completely changed the game on how we process the data as well as getting the results almost instantly. And today, it's well known as accelerated computing.

HP had officially announced and released their latest HP Workstation a while ago. But this time it opens up a new frontier, as a transportable HP Workstation. No, it's not a notebook and it's not a personal/desktop workstation either. It's a new game, new rules, yet still carrying brute force and performance of a personal/desktop workstation, written by HP. HP Z2 Mini  is the name for the new product, inheriting the performance of HP's personal/desktop workstation, with the size smaller than birthday cake box.

FreeCAD: Freedom to Create, Freedom to Pick Your Hardware

13/3/2017

With Blender initially released in 2002 as a free 3d modeling, rendering and animation software, it disrupted the market because it was dominated by commercial software which would cost you a fortune to buy it. It is very interesting as the community developed software has been growing significantly, it forces the software company to change their business model into yearly based license. Definitely getting more affordable to some, but still, it doesn't stop the community to develop even better software to share to the world.
